BigSkyMontana.us BigSkyMontana.us Description: In the summer of 1866 a man named Washington J. Stapleton was out hunting game. Upon dressing his deer he discovered a nugget. Washing it off in the nearby stream he noticed glistening particles on the creek bottom. He had discovered a new gold bar, which he named Stapleton, and the stream he named Washington. The Stapleton bar was very rich, and made many men fortunes. Camps sprang up all throughout the gulch. In 1866 Stapleton Bar opened a post office and the town name was changed to Washington Gulch. The post office changed locations later on, and was again renamed, to Finn, the name of a pioneer rancher.By 1893 the little town consisted of one hotel, one store, two saloon, two livery stables, two houses, and a stage station. Most of these structures have been either deserted or destroyed. All that remains today is a well-kept ranch, and a modern schoolhouse. Even in recent years the small general store sold almost entirely to miners, and often took gold dust for payment."
